Set in a gorgeous old manor home, this peaceful and welcoming getaway is a favourite hide-away of many LA notables. I fell in love with SLO many years ago the first time I drove the coast. The pace, the sun, the atmosphere. The Sanitarium makes the most of everything that makes for a great escape.
You are welcomed by the friendly owners. Art adorns the walls and instruments sit in every nook and cranny. Books abound and chairs are set up in the main room for the monthly music night that just happens to be the night we arrive. A cat rubs up against your leg and you’re handed a single gold key on a tasseled key ring. You wave hello to a guest seated at the large communal breakfast table, reading and sipping tea on a sunny Wednesday morning.
The rooms are beautiful and each different than the next. We chose the ‘Hydrolucinogen’ with the soaker tub, fireplace, walk-out patio beyond the bright french doors… and unique to our room, a huge steam shower (which we enjoyed).
Romantic, relaxing, and hands down the most livable quick stay we’ve ever had. (Meaning we would live there if we could).
I could go on and tell you about the wonderful home-cooked breakfast, or the amazing live music night shared with artists and guests alike, but instead I’ll just say… go. Stay, sleep, soak and take it all in. But don’t tell too many people. Let’s keep it our secret.
